My first major project at Concordia’s Environmental Health & Safety Department, the Biosafety Training module, marked a deep dive into the world of laboratory safety and regulatory standards. Built in Articulate Rise 360 with interactive elements from Storyline 360, this course aimed to equip researchers, staff, and students with essential biosafety principles, from containment levels to emergency protocols.
As someone new to biosafety, I faced a steep learning curve navigating complex scientific terminology and Canadian regulations. I dedicated time to reviewing federal standards, completing certifications, and cross-referencing content with subject matter experts. This process sharpened my ability to clarify technical language and structure compliance training with both accuracy and learner engagement in mind.
Through this project, I discovered that instructional design isn’t just about presenting content; it’s about making complex information accessible and meaningful. This experience taught me to approach design with critical thinking, attention to detail, and a learner-first mindset. It was a formative step in my growth as an instructional designer.
