Interactive training that helps laboratory users recognise laser hazards, understand protective measures, and prepare to work safely with Class 3B and Class 4 lasers.
Developed for Concordia University’s Environmental Health and Safety department, this course prepares faculty, staff, and students to work safely with laser systems in research and teaching laboratories. It covers laser fundamentals, beam and non-beam hazards, protective measures, university requirements, and incident reporting.
Process and Approach
Research and Content Analysis
Completed the existing narrated training and laser safety training offered by the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada (RSIC) to build my understanding of the subject. Researched specific laser safety engineering controls to clarify how protective measures work and translate technical information into accessible explanations.
Instructional Design
Structured the course around three connected stages: understanding laser fundamentals, recognising laboratory hazards, and applying appropriate controls. Used visual explanations, incident-based examples, scenarios and knowledge checks to connect technical concepts and university requirements with practical laboratory situations.
Development
Built the course in Articulate Rise 360 with embedded Storyline interactions, Vyond animations, and AI-assisted visuals. Used JavaScript to create a custom laser-safety mascot that provides guidance and audio tips throughout the course.
Developed supporting explanations and practice activities while clearly crediting RSIC-authored material.
